THAILAND Thailand

Thailand , is called officially the Kingdom of Thailand (Prathet Thai, or "Land of the Free"), country in Southeast Asia.

The geography - The territory of Thailand encompasses 514 thousand sq. km. The country is located on the Indo - Chinese peninsula and borders in the south on Malaysia, in the west - Myanmar (Burma), in the north and north - east on the river Mekong - with Laos, in the south - with Cambodia. The Capital of Thailand is Bangkok.

The climate - Climate in Thailand is characterized by three seasons: cool - from November till February, hot - from March till June, damp - from June till October.

The nature and animals - This country is possible to divide (share) into 6 regions: mountainous, north, covered with woods, where on forest - development they actually use the elephants, and the rather cool climate allows raising both strawberries and peaches; a droughty plateau north - east; the central plain, where the largest river - Chao Phraya proceeds and which valley is the main rice area of the country; east coast with perfect beaches; western part of the country which has been cut up by forested mountains and river valleys and, at last, in the south, on a peninsula Malay, is the traditional area of tin mining and fishing. This area also is famous for perfect islands with their sandy beaches and palms.

The population - most numerous ethnic group of the population is composed of ethnic Thai. The second place is granted to the Chinese population, which core population centers are inside cities. In the country live also a number of other ethnic groups.

The religion - State religion is Buddhism comprising about 93 % of the population. In Thailand live also Muslims, Christians, and Hindus. According to the Thai Constitution the king is the patron for the defence counsel of all religions.

Language - State language - Thai. In cities among the formed (educated) part of the population and in trade is widely utilized the English, Chinese and Japanese languages.

Currency - Monetary unit - Baht. 1 Baht = 100 satang. The exchange rate approximately: 1 $ US = 37 Baht. Daily exchange is displayed in financial sections of the majority of the newspapers. The import of currency is not limited by law. However anybody trying to import more than $10000, it is necessary to submit the declaration to Customs police. The local currency is regulated and no more than 50 000 Baht is to be taken out of the country when departing Thai Customs. On export of currency of other countries of restrictions are not present.

Communication (connected) - Local and international - round the clock. It is possible to call from numbers of the hotel, but the calls made on the telephone in the street or mail, cost much less money.

Electricity - Electrical voltage - 220 volts, 50 Hz - Common throughout the country.

The customs rules - Customs are authorized to demand duty on imports into the country subject to the following exemptions for personal usage: 1 photo - or videocamera, 5 films or 3 videocartridges, 200 pieces of cigarettes or 250 grammes of tobacco, 1 litre wine or spirit. The import of drugs, pornographic literature and weapons are forbidden. From Thailand it is forbidden to take out of the country antiques, ancient statues Buddha, an ivory Bone and any products from a leather (skin) of protected animals. Souvenirs - Popular souvenirs are: Hand painted fans, products from various exotic leathers, jeweller ornaments that compliment the use of pearls.

Transport - Internal bus service is a rather fast and inexpensive means of movement. Public transport consists of buses, taxi, motorcycle taxi and river taxi.

Tips - Here tips (small extra amount of cash to thank those that provide superior services) are loved by all - even by the sellers in shops when they provide extra special services. such as special delivery.

Clothes - There is a wide difference by neatness in clothes. The torn off jeans inspire disgust in many local Thais. Shorts (popular to wear by men and women) are admitted (allowed, allowable) only on a beach and in hotel. Young smiling women in mini - skirts are both numerous and common and are welcome anywhere though elders and religious Monks hold their concern quietly to themselves.

Rules of behaviour - Thailand is a Buddhian state. The image Buddha is sacred and any act of sacrilege threatens the perpitrator with imprisonment even if such misbehavior is accomplished by the foreigners.

The population - Thailand often concerns itself with the large respect to the king, the queen and royal family and consequently do not allow foreigners to speak about them with any disrespectful attitude (relation). During visiting statues of Buddha in temples it is necessary to observe the form of clothes, to touch the monk, to transfer or to take from him the necessary knowledge, and it is best to show polite respect.

Other practices - sunbathing without clothes on, in a naked kind, almost everywhere is forbidden. The sanitary norms - Visitors should drink only Boiled or special drinking water. Try not eat anything crude. For general (common) strengthening organisms before trip are useful. Other precautions such as for making an inoculation for hepatites A, are smart because such disease is transmitted through food. In the rural areas of Thailand there are practically few infectuous diseases other than those traditional for the tropics, so standard precautions generally suffice. In particular, the sun can damage skin and trigger cancerous growth of skin cells. One should always cover eyes with protective glasses and use sun-protection creams.
