Washington - District of Columbia (DC), population 572,000 persons. Metropolitan area around Washington, DC population is 5,400,000 persons. Area is 67 square miles divided into four quadrants. All quadrants meet at the US Capitol Building.

Washington, DC is the Capital of the United States and was designed by a French Architect, Pierre L'Enfant in 1791. Its streets and official buildings are laid out in a geometrical manner using some of the artifices of the Masonic Order. ( See recent movie "National Treasure" ) Numbered streets run North and South. Lettered streets run East and West. Avenues are named for US states and run diagonally, meeting frequently at traffic circles or public squares. Elevation average is 420 feet above sea level.

Climate - average January high 5 degrees C, low -1 degrees C. July high 31 degrees C and low 20 degrees C. Washington, DC is located 233 miles south of New York City.

About - Washington, DC is a port city on the Potomac River though navigable portions for most commerce are limited to Virginia port of Alexandria. Upstream of Washington, DC the Potomac River has a series of cataracts that were breached by a canal owned by a company managed by the first President of the United States, George Washington. Washington, DC is located south of Maryland and north of Virginia. The metropolitan (Metro) area includes The District of Columbia, seven Maryland counties (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince Georges), five Virginia Counties (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William, and Stafford), and six Virginia cities (Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park).

Transportation - Washington, DC is served by a modern transit system of busses, trains and underground (called the Metro). Metro is color coded with orange, blue, yellow, green and red lines. System uses paper magnetic cards or rfid cards for entry and exit. Fares vary by time of day or night and distance of trip. One way fare from end of line to downtown costs about $4. Parking is available at many outlying metro stops.
