Avenues are named for US states and run diagonally, meeting frequently at traffic circles or public squares.

- Washington, DC is a port city on the Potomac River though navigable portions for most commerce are limited to Virginia port of Alexandria. Upstream of Washington, DC the Potomac River has a series of cataracts that were breached by a canal owned by a company managed by the first President of the United States, George Washington. Washington, DC is located south of Maryland and north of Virginia. The metropolitan (Metro) area includes The District of Columbia, seven Maryland counties (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince Georges), five Virginia Counties (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William, and Stafford), and six Virginia cities (Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park).
Transportation

Parking is available at many outlying metro stops.
